Sydney hits 40C at midday before cool change could see temperatures plummet 15C

Heatwave baking NSW capital before forecast cool change with risk of severe thunderstorms, hail and strong winds

Sydneysiders are sweltering through a scorcher with temperatures hitting 40C in parts of the city ahead of an expected afternoon change, when temperatures could plummet 15C.

The Bureau of Meteorology said New South Wales would on Tuesday bear the brunt of the pool of very hot air that sent temperatures in parts of South Australia and Victoria into the 40s on Monday.
