800 Miles Home: The Unbelievable Journey of Rainbow the Cat

First reported by ABC7

Introduction: A Family Reunited

In a tale that seems almost too incredible to believe, a California couple has been reunited with their beloved house cat, Rainbow, after a staggering 800-mile journey. The Salinas-based couple, Benny and Susanne Anguiano, had taken their feline on a camping trip to Yellowstone National Park, but to their shock, Rainbow disappeared.

Two months later, their beloved pet was found in Roseville, California, at an SPCA shelter.

A Journey Against the Odds

It’s a question that has puzzled many: how did Rainbow, a domestic house cat, travel more than 800 miles?

As Susanne Anguiano recounted, their once-spirited cat was in rough shape when they found him. “He was really depleted,” Susanne said. “He probably didn’t have a lot of energy to even go further.”

The couple remains mystified, as they have no idea how Rainbow made such an unconceivable trek across mountains, highways, and miles of wilderness.

Theories of Survival

Could Rainbow have hitched a ride with a kind stranger?

Did he navigate the journey through sheer instinct, finding food and water along the way?

The Anguianos hope that by sharing their story, someone who saw Rainbow might come forward with clues. “Hey, I remember that cat,” Benny Anguiano said, hoping that someone will recognize their beloved pet from his journey.

An important lesson in pet safety. “Definitely microchip your cat or your pet and register the microchip online,” Susanne said. “We would have never gotten him back had that not happened.”

A Lesson for Pet Owners Everywhere

While Rainbow’s miraculous return has been a joyous occasion, Benny and Susanne have learned an important lesson about pet safety.

They encourage all pet owners to take precautions, like using a microchip or a global tracker, to ensure their pets can be found if they go missing. “Definitely microchip your cat or your pet and register the microchip online,” Susanne said. “We would have never gotten him back had that not happened.”

A Happy Ending, with Lessons for the Future

Rainbow is now back home, safe and sound, reunited with his feline siblings.

Although the Anguianos plan to take their cats on more trips, they are determined to wait until everyone is ready. “We’ll be a little more careful next time,” Benny added, smiling.
